BUDDY BENCHES
We joined forces with Loneliness Networks across the Northern Trust area to raise awareness of and reduce the stigma around loneliness by installing Buddy Benches in the local area.
We joined forces with Loneliness Networks across the Northern Trust area to raise awareness of and reduce the stigma around loneliness by installing Buddy Benches in the local area.
The Buddy Bench is an initiative which has been led by the members of our group with support from BBC Children In Need. The benches encourage people to sit and have a chat with others, with the aim of helping those feeling lonely meet new people.
The Loneliness Network aims to raise awareness of loneliness, share best practice and learning on ways to prevent and address loneliness, and encourage the championing of tackling loneliness across the Borough.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Billy Webb said:
“It’s great to have another Buddy Bench installed within the Borough. Our parks and open spaces play a hugely important role in supporting the physical and mental health of our residents and we hope the addition of this bench in Antrim Castle Gardens will go some way to addressing the issue of loneliness in the Borough."
To raise awareness of this growing issue and to mark Loneliness Awareness Week, we worked with the Borough to light up the local Civic buildings in June 2020.
The newest bench, situated in Antrim's Castle Grounds, was also visited by Health Minister Robin Swann.
We believe that a wee chat goes a long way. Talking to someone, even if it is on a bench, can help improve your overall mental health. Let's continue the conversation and keep your eyes peeled for more blue benches popping up across other areas of the Borough Council area.
